More Information About Phoenix

The palm tree genus Phoenix contains just 14 species that are widely spread from the Phillipines west to the Canary islands off the coast of Africa. Some members have just enough cold tolerance to be marginally hardy here in the Raleigh area. One species, Phoenix dacytlifera, is famous for being the date palm of commerce, producing large sweet fruit.

Phoenix palms vary widely in form from trunkless dwarfs to some of the tallest palm trees in the world. And they vary widely in habitat from dry deserts to mangrove swamps. They are all, however, single-trunked, pinnate-leaved (like a feather) palms. A few species will sucker to form a cluster of trees in close proximity to one another
