More Information About Phegopteris

The genus Phegopteris is small, with just 3 species of diminuitive (usually under 2' tall), charming, deciduous ferns native to temperate regions of North America (Phegopteris connectilis, Phegopteris hexagonptera) and eastern Asia (Phegopteris decursive-pinnata).

In the US, phegopteris can be found growing in the eastern half of the country from Wisconsin to Florida. Architectural in appearance, phegopteris fronds are small, light green and arrowhead-shaped or triangular. Phegopteris is a great little deer-resistant fern for the woodland garden and pairs well with drimiopsis, the smaller hostas, and oxalis.

Like most garden ferns, phegopteris prefers a part shade location and rich, moist, well-drained, slightly acidic soil. Although slow to spread, phegopteris will eventually fill in a small area and makes a great short groundcover.
