Packera is a genus of 64 species of small North American native wild flowers named for the Canadian Botanist, John G. Packer, of the University of Alberta, who has done extensive work with this group of plants. Most packera species live in temperate or arctic regions of North America, but a few can be found in sub-tropical North America and 2 packera species have been reported in Siberia.
The entire genus Packera was once part of the genus Senecio but the 64 species of packera were segregated out in 1981 after analyses showed them to have a different chromosome count. Some packera species are common and are spread over large regions of North America, while others are endangered and have a very small native range. Where their habitats overlap, packera species form natural hybrids.
Packera species are small aster relatives with yellow flowers that bloom in spring, summer, or fall depending on the species. In the wild, packera lives in sunny or part sun locations in a variety of habitats and soil types. Species that live in drier climates often have attractive wooly hairs on the leaves or are succulents. Due to its small size, packera can be used in the landscape as a rock garden plant, or planted in small drifts. Packera is also perfect for butterfly gardens, native wildflower beds or meadow gardens. Some packera species tolerate wet feet and can be planted in bog or rain gardens.
