More Information About Ophiopogon

While everyone has seen the typical green mondo grass, and dwarf mondo grass (Ophiopogon japonicus 'Nana'), the Japanese have been selecting new color forms (e.g., black mondo grass...Ophiopogon planiscapus) and extreme dwarf forms of ophiopogon for years (e.g., Ophiopogon japonicus 'Gyoku Ryu'...much shorter than Ophiopogon japonicus 'Nana').

Plant Delights has the largest selection of rare and unusual mondo grasses in the US including many dwarf mondo grass selections that are better than the ubiquitous 'Nana'. Ophiopogons are durable, easy-to-grow, low-maintenance, ornamental grass-like groundcovers for shady perennial gardens.

Tips for Growing Mondo Grass

Plants in the genus Ophiopogon are either clumpers or runners. Some of the running ophiopogon cultivars (such as Ophiopogon 'Gyoku Ryu') produce a tight mat of foliage, while others, like black mondo grass (Ophiopogon planiscapus 'Arabicus', 'Kokuryu', etc.), produce a more open patch. Ophiopogon prefers partial shade and even moisture, but is drought-tolerant once established.

Plant Delights Nursery is the nation's foremost nursery for ophiopogon. We grow more species and cultivars of liriope and ophiopogon than any other nursery in the world and in 2015 we worked with Dr. Paul Fantz of NC State University to publish an award winning journal article describing Liriopes grown in the US.
