More Information About Muhlenbergia

Muhlenbergia is a group of US native (including North Carolina) and Mexican native ornamental grasses for sale that are beautiful and easy to grow. The most popular of these is Muhlenbergia capillaris, aka purple muhly grass. Muhlenbergia capillaris is a tough, heat-loving, perennial ornamental grass genus that is not only well-behaved in the garden, but is so showy that it should be grown as an annual outside of its hardiness range.

Typically, Muhlenbergia capillarus plants have diffuse cloud-like seed heads floating above the canopy in fall. Recent selections have increased the color range, so in addition to the popular purple muhly grass, there are white and pink muhly grass selections available for sale too.

Whether planted as a specimen, along a border, or in large drifts on a hillside, Purple muhly grass puts on a dazzling fall show of color. The color effect is intensified in late afternoon when the descending sun lights up the seed heads from behind.

Muhlenbergia plants are as tough and flexible in the garden as any perennial ornamental grasses for sale. Purple muhly grass prefers full sun, tolerate drought, are not ravaged by deer but do attract butterflies. It is a tough, low maintenance plant which makes it perfect for rain gardens.

Try pairing muhly grass with other plants that peak in the autumn like aster, helianthes, solidago and salvia. When you're ready to buy muhlenbergia (purple muhly grass) for your garden, check out our list of muhly grass for sale.
