Lachnocaulon is a little bog plant native to the southeast US that forms a cute grass-like tuft of foliage topped in summer with scores of flower stalks each ending in a cluster of tiny white flowers that collectively are the size of a button, hence the common name bog buttons or bachelor's buttons. Another common name for Lachnocaulon is hat pins...and the flower stalks certainly are reminiscent of those as well. Lachnocaulon is a charming plant that would make a great companion for other small bog plants like Dionaea, Drosera and the dwarf Sarracenias. Lachnocaulon is easy to grow...full sun and moist soil. Although Lachnocaulon prefers wet soil and in the wild is usually found growing in boggy areas, it can also be found growing in dry, sandy soils...a testament to the adaptability and toughness of this little plant.
