More Information About Itea

Itea is a small genus of about 18 species that are native worldwide. Only three species, the American Itea virginiana, the Chinese Itea ilicifolia and Itea yunnanensis are used as ornamentals. These species are small shrubs with long, pendent, white, fragrant flower clusters. The Chinese species are evergreen while the native Itea virginica is deciduous and has fantastic red fall foliage.

In the wild, Itea plants are found along wooded stream banks. In cultivation, itea grows equally as well in sun to part shade environments as long as the soils aren't extremely dry. In the wild, these plants can grow to 6' or so, but cultivated varieties of itea tend to be shorter and more controlled. Try pairing itea with iris, carex, or heuchera for textural and color combinations. When you are ready to buy itea for your perennial garden, we hope you'll check out our online offering of itea for sale.
