More Information About Hyalis

Hyalis is a monotypic genus of silver-leaved perennials whose sole species, H. argentea, is found in the salt plains of Patagonia in Argentina along with grasses like Sporobolus. We like Hyalis as a garden plant because it is tough, easy to grow, salt tolerant and drought tolerant. And oh yeah, it is pretty too. Hyalis forms a low bushy mound of silver leaves that combines well with other xeriscape plants like cacti and agaves. In the summer, Hyalis produces small white or pale lavender flowers. With time, Hyalis plants spread on underground rhizomes. The spanish speakers call Hyalis, olivillo (little olive) which is a common named used for several other plants in the region.
