More Information About Gaura

Gaura lindheimeri burst onto the mainstream gardening scene in the early 1980s from its previous role as an obscure US native roadside perennial wildflower. Since then, breeders from around the world have realized its garden potential and have bred for and selected new garden-worthy varieties of Gaura lindheimeri.

As you might have guessed, Gaura lindheimeri, as a Texas roadside perennial, loves heat, full sun, tolerates drought, and is not too picky about soil conditions. It is a tough, low maintenance plant which makes it perfect for rain gardens and rock gardens. Your gaura will perform best if the bed is deep with well-drained soil as the plant produces a long taproot. In the wild, gaura grows up to 6' tall, but garden varieties have been tamed into a much shorter perennial. Try planting gaura as a specimen plant, in a large mass planting, in a container, or combine it in a perennial border with agave, ornamental grass, or yucca. Gaura is a wonderful deer-resistant magnet for butterflies. Don't confuse the well-behaved garden perennial Gaura lindheimeri with its weedy, seedy, and speedy relatives like G. glabra, G. coccinea, and G. odorata. The gaura that we sell will not make a nuisance of iteself in your garden. When you are ready to buy gaura for your sunny perennial garden, check out our gaura for sale.
