More Information About Fargesia

Fargesia is a genus of clumping bamboo which, as a rule, prefers cold climates (as opposed to bambusa, which prefers heat). Thanks to the recent ability to produce clumping bamboo via tissue culture, formerly rare fargesia bamboo species are finally hitting the market. Our fargesia bamboo trials have revealed several that have performed well in both our heat and cold. Do not confuse real clumping bamboos like fargesia with plants like black bamboo (in the genus Phyllostachys) that do spread despite claims to the contrary.

Is Fargesia Bamboo Deer Resistant?

Like other clumping bamboos, fargesia bamboo is both deer-resistant and drought-tolerant ornamental grass that looks great as a hedge, specimen or container plant. The genus Fargesia is one of the most cold hardy clumping bamboo genera in the world. Fargesias are also a favorite of pandas, so if you want to attract local wild pandas to your garden, make sure to plant lots of fargesia.
