More Information About Claytonia

Claytonia is a small genus of 2 dozen or so species of perennial wildflowers named for the colonial American botanist, John Clayton (1693-1773) who botanized Virginia from 1715 to the 1730s. Claytonia is a small, ephemeral, woodland genus with narrow, grass-like leaves and early-blooming, pastel flowers.

Claytonia prefers consistent moisture, and organically rich well-drained soil. The small Claytonia bulbs will offset freely and create a nice little colony with time. When they get crowded, you can divide your Claytonia and share them with friends or cook and eat them like the colonial Americans did. Apparently, claytonia bulbs have a chestnut-like flavor.

Claytonia looks great in woodland gardens, meadows, rock gardens, wildflower gardens or even in lawns. Claytonia can be combined with other small, spring blooming perennials such as crocus, ipheion, or narcissus.
