More Information About Bambusa

Bambusa is a mostly tropical genus of large clumping bamboos that was considered off limits in our area due to our winter temperatures. After experimenting since the early 1990s we have found several selections of Bambusa multiplex that we can recommend for gardens from here (zone 7b) and south. The Bambusa cultivars that we have for sale are totally unlike the running bamboo (primarily genus phyllostachys) that you see choking out gardens, parks, and roadsides. Bambusa is a well-behaved, slowly expanding clumping bamboo.

Bamboo is actually a type of ornamental grass that prefers full to part sun. Plant your Bambusa in a well-draining soil and watch it grow (but not spread). Bambusa is deer-resistant and drought-tolerant once established. Gardeners can grow Bambusa as a specimen plant, as a hedge, or in a container. At the northern end of its hardiness range, bambusa will die back in winter, but will resprout from the roots the following summer.

We strongly recommend that you buy clumping bamboo instead of the more common running bamboo types, which inevitably make a nuisance of themselves in your garden and in your neighbors' garden too. Plant Delights offers a nice selection of cold-hardy clumping bamboo for sale including bambusa, borinda, and fargesia. When you are ready to buy clumping bamboo, check out our selection of clumping bamboo for sale.
