The genus Astilbe contains almost two dozen species of perennials that are native to North America and Asia. Astilbe selections are reliable garden favorites, but not in areas with hot, humid summers. We have trialed many astilbes, and offer those which have shown good heat tolerance in our southern climate. For starters, we recommend the Astilbe chinensis types and hybrids which are much more forgiving under adverse conditions. Astilbe provides a dramatic color display in the spring woodland garden with brightly colored, feathery flower spikes atop attractive, deeply-cut foliage.

Astilbe Growing Tips

Astilbe prefers a moist site, even wet feet and is perfect for growing by a pond or stream. Some are also salt tolerant plants. Although usually listed as a shade plant, astilbe prefers part sun if it has plenty of soil moisture. Astilbe looks great when planted in a large group where its colorful flowers paint a broad swath and attract butterflies.
