More Information About Arachniodes
This genus of mostly evergreen ferns hails primarily from Asia, where they form compact colonies or tight clumps. In appearance, they are similar to dryopteris, with virtually all species having good garden merit. Typically, arachniodes are not the fastest ferns to grow, but they make great long-term garden specimens. A few species have thick foliage with a leathery or plastic appearance to them.
Also known commonly as Spider ferns, they prefer partial shade and moist, well-drained, rich soil. As with most ferns, they are quite deer-resistant. In the woodland perennial garden, spider ferns pair well with hosta, helleborus, aspidistra, or bergenia.
