More Information About Anomatheca

The genus Anomatheca is an iris relative that is endemic to Africa with 6 species in the central and southern part of the continent. Anomatheca is closely related to freesia and some taxonomists have transferred the 6 species into the genera Freesia and Xenoscapa. Anomatheca plants grow from corms and flower in the late spring with brightly colored blooms of red, pink or purple.

In its native habitat, anomatheca lives through hot, dry summers and often goes dormant in order to avoid the worst of the summer drought. It stays dormant until the following spring when it bursts forth with narrow 8" tall grass-like foliage. Anomatheca will bloom in late spring, just prior to going dormant. During its long dormant period, anomatheca should stay dry, so plant it in well-draining soil to prevent the corms from rotting. At the northern end of its hardiness range, anomatheca beds should be heavily mulched to provide insulation. Don't forget to mark the location of your anomatheca bulbs so that you do not accidentally dig them up.
