Ruth acquired the \u003ca title=\"Shop our collection of aster\" href=\"https:\/\/www.plantdelights.com\/collections\/aster\"\u003easter\u003c\/a\u003e from her maid, Fanny, who acquired it as a pass-along plant from her grandmother. Symphyotrichum oblongifolium 'Fanny' is one of the last asters to flower in our garden, usually in October and November. 'Fanny' (the aster, not the maid) makes a nice 2' tall clump to 8' in width and is smothered with 1\" blue flowers starting in October (NC)...awesome! For a fall show in a hot dry site, a nice 'Fanny' is a hard thing to beat.\u003c\/p\u003e \u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eMaintenance:\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\r\n\u003cp\u003eThe main maintenance requirement of this aster is to cut it to the ground before new growth starts in spring. The tidy-minded gardener can cut it to ground as soon as he feels a need to do so once it is done blooming. Symphyotrichum oblongifolium 'Fanny's' can benefit from a hard cut back in early to mid summer if it grows in a more sprawling habit than desired. In full sun and a lean diet it often doesn't need this pinching back. Aspidistra must be grown in shade, since their foliage will scorch if they are subjected to sun. In the jungles where they grow, they are often seen in very deep shade.\u003c\/p\u003e\r\n\u003cp\u003eIn containers, they make superb house plants. The common name cast iron plant speaks to their durability in less than ideal conditions. It is a very slender plant, perhaps only 12 to 18\" tall despite its 4' height so it can be tucked amongst many other plants. The foliage can be removed when it has turned brown and that is about it. Often even this is not necessary. Rain lily cultivars that multiply rapidly, and many do, often push bulbs up out of the ground as they get crowded. These need to be reset so the bulbs are underground, protected from freezing weather. When a rain lily gets to this stage it is a good time to dig the whole clump, divide into smaller clumps and replant them.
