The Canna Lily is a tough beautiful perennial that provides amazing flower power, dazzling foliage color, or in the case of Canna Tropicanna, both. Canna lilies are bold perennials that team well with ornamental grasses, hibiscus, hymenocallis, brugmansia and helianthus. Tall Canna Lily cultivars are perfect for the back of the border, and dwarf canna lilies can be used along the edge of a path.
Canna lily flowers attract hummingbirds and butterflies to the garden. After they are done flowering, Canna lilies produce spiky seed pods that hold the large, very hard seeds. They are so hard in fact, that canna lily seeds have been used as shotgun pellets and rosary beads.
Canna lilies are very easy to grow. More sun + more water = more canna! You may have to periodically remove canna leaf rollers and leaves with canna rust on them, but in most cases the effort is minimal. If a canna lily gets to be too worn looking, simply cut the entire plant down to 6" tall and wait for a few weeks while the plant regrows from the roots. Many canna lilies can be grown in bogs, but a few cannot so pay attention to the instructions on the individual cultivar.
