Yucca 'Color Guard' is a fabulous selection of our Southeast US native Yucca filamentosa that was brought into the US from Japan by the late hosta guru Paul Aden. Yucca 'Color Guard' is without question the most stunning gold-centered variegated Yucca filamentosa selection on the market. The growth habit of Yucca 'Color Guard' is similar to Yucca 'Golden Sword' except that the center coloration brightens to a creamy-gold in midsummer when others begin to fade. The deer-resistant foliage is also covered in hundreds of curly white hairs, which can be shaved off if the lack of grooming bothers you. Dan Hinkley, founder of Heronswood, rates this among his top 10 most indispensable plants! Each 3' wide clump is topped with 6' stalks of white, hummingbird-attracting flowers in spring...AWESOME!
From the late Texas plant explorer, Logan Calhoun, comes this splendid white-flowered form of the Midwest US native wine cups. Typically bearing a wine-colored flower, Callirhoe involucrata var. lineariloba 'Logan Calhoun' was selected by Logan for the large, pure white flowers on this heat-tolerant, 3' wide, clumping ground cover. For us, the white flowers top the geranium-like, cut-leaf foliage from April through July. In late summer, the clumps of Callirhoe 'Logan Calhoun' shrink back into the ground for a rest. The more hot and sunny the climate, the better wine cups perform. We still see this often listed as Callirhoe alcaeoides, which is a completely different plant!
This South African broom fern really swept me off my feet with its garden performance. Asparagus virgatus is a wonderful winter-hardy evergreen garden addition where an airy texture in sun is needed. The 3' tall upright spikes open into a soft, thread-like, green "broom." Each 3' wide drought-tolerant clump can be used as a textural contrast in the garden, for a long-lasting filler in floral arrangements, or to treat syphilis and intestinal worms. You gotta love those multi-use plants. In September the foliage of Asparagus virgatus is adorned with a multitude (catalog lingo for more than one) of small red berries.
