Thermopsis is a lupine-like or baptisia-like member of the pea family (Fabaceae) that grows well in locations where real lupines will not. The genus thermopsis, which contains roughly two dozen species, is native from North America to Central Asia.
In the wild, thermopsis grows on montane sites and in open fields. Members of the genus thermopsis are upright perennials from 3' to 5' tall with clusters of butterfly-attracting, yellow flowers arranged along a tall spike.
