Why the prairie dropseed isn't grown more is amazing. This small native prairie grass, found from Canada to Texas, is a winner in the garden. The very fine-textured leaves arch upward and outward to form a very graceful clump to 18" wide. In late summer, the clumps are topped with misty plumes rising well above the foliage. In fall, the entire clump turns a wonderful bright gold. Prairie dropseed prefers well-drained soils, and although quite drought-tolerant, the ornamental value is enhanced with an occasional summer watering.
