(aka: Piloblephis rigida, Satureja rigida) Pycnothymus rigidus is a little-known native shrub mint from Florida that is found in sandy acidic soil and often in moist but well-drained pinelands where it makes a 2' tall x 2' wide shrublet of tiny aromatic green leaves. The plant is adorned with small butterfly-attracting lavender flowers from November to April in all but the coldest weather. Pycnothymus is used to make a hot tea that native Americans drank to reduce fevers. We have found this to be an easy-to-grow container plant in regions where it is not winter hardy. Our clone is cutting-grown from a plant in northern Florida.
