Penstemon cobaea is a short-lived US Midwest native beardtongue that boasts the largest flowers of any penstemon species. Showy beardtongue forms a rosette of glossy green leaves that expands upward, resulting in a 30" tall flowering spike. In early summer, the spike is laden with huge, lavender, bell-shaped flowers (occasionally pink or white occurs). In flower, Penstemon cobaea is truly a stunning plant. Penstemon cobaea must have very well-drained soils and a baking, sunny position in the garden to thrive.
