(aka: Festuca cinerea, Festuca ovina) Festuca glauca 'Elijah Blue' is a tightly-clumping ornamental grass that is a must-have element in a sunny garden, both for its unusual color and texture. The 1' tall x 18" wide clump of needle-thin, soft silver-blue leaves form an evergreen mound resembling the coiffure of some of the late night, heavily-tattooed grocery store cashiers. Festuca 'Elijah Blue', from the late Lois Woodhull of New York's The Plantage Nursery, is still one of the best and most durable selections of blue fescue. Festuca 'Elijah Blue' was named after the nursery location on Elijah Lane. Sunny, well-drained soils are best and for long-term durability, I'd recommend dividing the clump every 3-5 years...in fall or early spring. Elijah Blue fescue clumps are topped with attractive flower spikes in late spring, held just above the foliage.
