(aka: Zantedeschia 'Edge of Night') This fabulous zantedeschia has an interesting back story. It originated as a hybrid seedling from Dutch calla lily specialist, Sande BV, as part of their breeding program. A tuber was inadvertently mixed with a US bound shipment of Zantedeschia 'Schwarzwalder', where it was spotted by the late Frank Patterson of Oregon. A botch by the US Patent Office allowed the same plant to be patented by both Sande BV and Oregon's Terra Nova. When the error was discovered, Terra Nova switched to Sande's original name. The foliage of the amazing Zantedeschia 'Black Star' is green, highlighted by small, white spots and a unique, black-purple leaf edge. In June (NC), the 2' tall x 1' wide clumps are topped with dark, black-purple, chalice-shaped flowers...simply amazing and a great addition to the black garden. As with all hybrid zantedeschia, they do not emerge until mid-May, so be patient.
