This introduction from California's famed Western Hills Nursery forms upright clumps composed of large, hastate, white-spotted leaves that, for us, reach 3' or taller when mature. We have not found this to grow as large as Zantedeschia 'White Giant'. In late spring, Zantedeschia 'Hercules' clumps are topped with 4' tall spikes ending in a large white chalice. Our plants are from the clone that has been grown for years at Strybing Arboretum. Pot Size: 3.5" (24 fl. oz/709.77 ml)
As we headed to the top of South Africa's famed West Cape Swartberg Pass, we stopped at 4,300' elevation when we saw a patch of Zantedeschia aethiopica growing in a wet seep along the steep mountain cliffs. Of several seedlings from different locations on our month long trek, this clone stood out in our trials for its luscious, tropical-looking, 21" long, heavily ruffled, dark green leaves and insanely huge 7" white flowers, starting in April (NC). For us, the clumps have topped out at just over 4' tall, while the flowers reach 4.5' in height. This is a truly impressive selection, although our quantities are somewhat limited...a 2013 Plant Delights introduction! Pot Size: 3.5" (24 fl. oz/709.77 ml)
We first saw this giant calla at the California garden of plantsman/garden writer, Sonny Garcia, and were literally blown away. Lining the walkway were these giant, green and white speckled-leaved Zantedeschia aethiopica callas, whose foliage topped out above waist high. Even more amazing were the 6' tall flower stems towering above my head. The flower is the classic, large, creamy-white cup typical of the species...except Zantedeschia 'White Giant' has been doing some really good steroids. In our garden, we have only been able to muster 4' tall stems, 2' long x 1' wide foliage and 5.5' tall flower spikes, but that's still not bad. Keep in mind the height increases each year as the diameter of the tubers increase. Pot Size: 3.5" (24 fl. oz/709.77 ml)
Zantedeschia 'Captain Camaro' is the latest in the Captain® series of tricked-out callas from Holland's Kapiteyn Breeding. Zantedeschia 'Captain Camaro' makes a clump of green foliage spotted with white flecks and edged in purple on emergence. The clumps are subsequently topped in late spring with 18" tall chalices of dark purple-black, edged with a pink flush. 'Captain Camaro' is an amazing specimen that can be mixed with gold and blue foliage plants for some killer combinations in the perennial garden. I cannot for the life of me figure out why this calla was named after a Chevrolet...hmmm. Pot Size: 3.5" (24 fl. oz/709.77 ml)
Zantedeschia 'Captain Murano' is a 2010 release from Holland's Kapiteyn Breeding...the producers of the extensive Captain® Series of callas. Zantedeschia 'Captain Murano' produces white specked green leaves that serve as a foil for the 18" tall flower spikes in late spring. The flower spikes are then topped with pitchers (spathes) that are hot pink on top with an orange base, contrasted by a yellow spadix...seriously psychedelic! In the garden, slightly moist soils and part sun produce the best results. In climates north of Zone 7b, they can be lifted in fall and stored in peat moss during winter, where they are kept just above freezing. Pot Size: 3.5" (24 fl. oz/709.77 ml)
Zantedeschia 'Odessa' is a new calla lily hybrid with white-flecked glossy green leaves, topped in early summer with an abundance of glossy black purple chalice-like flowers on 20" tall spikes. We've got Zantedeschia 'Odessa' to trial for garden performance, and have a few extras for anyone else who'd like to join us. Pot Size: 3.5" (24 fl. oz/709.77 ml)
From Holland's Sande Breeding callas comes Zantedeschia 'Paco', with 18" tall flower stalks in late spring. Each floral pitcher has a lovely dark purple center with a mauvy pink border...very cool. Pot Size: 3.5" (24 fl. oz/709.77 ml)
We just love this amazing breakthrough in calla lily breeding from Holland's Cecilius Jan-Jochem Randag. Zantedeschia 'Picasso' is a robust grower, forming a 30" tall x 18" wide clump of large, white-spotted, arrow-shaped leaves. The clump is topped, starting in late May (NC) and continuing well through the summer, with up to two dozen 30" spikes, each ending in a vaaaze-shaped inflorescence of purple with a wide white lip...almost too sexy for our garden. Pot Size: 3.5" (24 fl. oz/709.77 ml)
Zephyranthes 'Ajax' is a delightful old rain lily hybrid, which is inexplicably hard to find in the commercial trade. This cross of Zephyranthes candida x Zephyranthes citrina makes a vigorous clump of fast multiplying bulbs, each producing round green leaves like its Zephyranthes candida parent. The clumps are topped after each rain, starting in midsummer, with 2" straw-yellow upfacing flowers. Each flower is open two days...yellow the first day and white the second. Pot Size: 3.5" (24 fl. oz/709.77 ml)
Zephyranthes 'Apricot Queen' is a fabulous Thad Howard hybrid of Zephyranthes 'Ruth Page' x Zephyranthes pulchella ...one of the most unique rain lilies we grow. The glossy green foliage is topped, starting in late summer, with 6" tall spikes of 1.5" - 2" rounded flowers that open the first day as a lovely peachy apricot. The second day, the flowers change to a scrumptious peach sherbert orange. Zephyranthes 'Apricot Queen' is a reliable rain lily that has quickly become one of our favorites. Pot Size: 3.5" (24 fl. oz/709.77 ml)
Among my fondest memories growing up is walking through the woods enjoying my favorite North American wildflower combination, atamasco lily and poison ivy. The nearly unnoticeable short, round, green, pencil-thin foliage of atamasco lily appears in early spring, but it's not until mid-April when the 3" wide pure white flowers open on top of 10" stems that you really take notice. After a month, the flowering stops and the foliage goes to sleep for the summer. Zephyranthes atamasca prefers a damp, even boggy, site for best results. Atamasco lily is native from Maryland south to Florida, but our offering is from Guilford County, NC plants. Pot Size: 3.5" (24 fl. oz/709.77 ml)
(aka: Zephyranthes FM #65) This new rain lily from Indonesia's Fadjar Marta produces 6" stalks topped, starting in early July, with 2.5" apricot-colored flowers, highlighted by a yellow center. Each petal of Zephyranthes 'Batik' is highlighted with a suffuse yellow stripe down the center...quite nice! When summer showers are plentiful, we get good rebloom all summer...rain not included. Pot Size: 3.5" (24 fl. oz/709.77 ml)
Zephyranthes 'Big Dude' is one of our selections from the seed strain Zephyranthes 'Labuffarosea'. We were looking for a selection with large flowers and a fast-multiplying habit, and this is the result. Each flower can reach an amazing 4" in width. The large, white petals are tipped with a faint blush of pink on the tips. This easy-to-grow rain lily is amazing when the entire clump bursts into flower after a rain. For us, flowering on Zephyranthes 'Big Dude' starts in early summer and continues until frost. Pot Size: 3.5" (24 fl. oz/709.77 ml)
This wonderful, semi-evergreen rain lily just can't be beaten as an easy-to-grow garden performer. The round, narrow, dark green foliage makes a thick clump. Beginning in summer, 1" tall, pure white, star-like flowers with dramatic golden stamens (pollen holders) arise just above the foliage. Zephyranthes candida makes a great specimen clump, but when used in a mass or for a border, it is simply indescribable! Although quite durable, Zephyranthes candida performs best in a rich or very moist site. Pot Size: 3.5" (24 fl. oz/709.77 ml)
Zephyranthes 'Crimson Sunset' is a 2011 release from the breeding work of Indonesia's Fadjar Marta. After rains, from midsummer through early fall, Zephyranthes 'Crimson Sunset' bursts forth with large peachy-pink flowers, highlighted by a yellow center and yellow veins that run out into the petals..simply scrumptious! Pot Size: 3.5" (24 fl. oz/709.77 ml)
We discovered this huge flowering selection of Zephyranthes drummondii at 3,500' in the Sierra Chiquita mountains of Mexico in 1994. The flat, glaucous leaves produce huge, 2.5" wide diameter offsetting bulbs. For us, Zephyranthes drummondii 'Fedora' makes a 1' diameter clump, which begins flowering in late April to early May and reblooms well throughout late August as summer rains pass by. The large, 3", pure white, nocturnally-opening, fragrant flowers atop 8" stalks are simply superb. Our offerings are divisions from our original bulb. Pot Size: 3.5" (24 fl. oz/709.77 ml)
Zephyranthes 'Eastern Pearl' is a 2010 Fadjar Marta introduction which is topped after summer rains with clusters of lovely 3" wide, peachy-pink flowers, highlighted with butter-yellow stripes down the center of each petal and a dark yellow eye...simply scrumptious! Quantities are very limited. Pot Size: 3.5" (24 fl. oz/709.77 ml)
(Often incorrectly listed as Zephyranthes rosea) This wonderful rain lily has 8" long, flat, glossy green foliage that quickly forms a nice 1' wide clump. All summer, the clump is topped with 12" tall stalks of giant, libido-awakening, 3" rose-pink flowers (RHS 75B). A clump can have up to 20 flowers open at once...absolutely spectacular. Zephyranthes grandiflora can be even more of a shocker when used in a mass planting...nothing demure or quaint here! Pot Size: 3.5" (24 fl. oz/709.77 ml)
It's hard to remember the emotions that ran through my mind when I first saw Zephyranthes 'Heart Throb' in flower, but my guess is, it must have resembled a female's hot flash. This Yucca Do introduction is a Zephyranthes 'Labuffarosea' seedling that's simply hard to describe...but I'll try. Atop 6" stalks from midsummer through fall (after rains) unfurl lovely, 2" unique reddish-pink (that's hard to capture with the camera) flowers with a white eye. The flowers change from dark reddish pink to medium pink on day two, still highlighted by the contrasting white central eye-zone. Zephyranthes 'Heart Throb' isn't fast to multiply, hence the long delay in finally getting this to market, but we hope you'll agree it was worth the wait. Pot Size: 3.5" (24 fl. oz/709.77 ml)
(aka: Z. FM #01) This Zephyranthes 'Krakatau' is a 2007 Plant Delights introduction from Fadjar Marta's fabulous breeding program, that erupts into flower starting in mid-July and continues all summer with 10" tall spikes, each ending in a 2" wide cupped flower of bright reddish-orange. Each flower on this floriferous rain lily is further highlighted with a bright yellow central pattern. On the second day, the flowers change to a peachy color. You'll find Zephyranthes 'Krakatau' quite worthy of its explosive namesake. Pot Size: 3.5" (24 fl. oz/709.77 ml)
