This stunning xAmarcrinum (hybrid of Amaryllis belladonna x Crinum) originated as an open pollinated (result of wild, unprotected sex) seedling in a Fresno, California garden. It was subsequently spotted and named after its conception method by bulb collector, Herb Kelly, around 1980. The 20" tall spikes of flowers, which open pale pink and quickly change to pure white, start for us in late summer and continue until fall. This is a rarely-offered gem, available only in limited quantities. Pot Size: 3.5" (24 fl. oz/709.77 ml)
xAmarcrinum is one of those rare man-made wonders rivaling the Great Pyramids! This bigeneric hybrid of Amaryllis belladonna x Crinum moorei produced one of the most fabulous bulbous perennials for the South. The short, glossy, strap-like leaves to 18" give rise in the hottest part of summer to 2' stalks, each topped with 6-8 large, lovely pink, exquisitely fragrant flowers. As soon as one stalk finishes flowering, another emerges, and this flowering pattern continues until frost. In colder climates, xAmarcrinum makes a superb potted specimen! Pot Size: 3.5" (24 fl. oz/709.77 ml)
(aka: Butiagrus) We are thrilled to offer the rare palm hybrid between Butia capitata and Syagrus romanzoffiana. Although the hybrid xButyagrus nabonnandii can be found naturally in the wild, our plants are from cultivated hand crosses. The palm is named for French horticulturist Paul Nabonnand (1860-1937), who first coaxed the palms to mate. The mule palm hybrid shows amazing vigor comparable to syagrus, and will eventually reach 18' in height. Palm growers who have tried these report surprisingly good winter hardiness, often similar to the butia parent. We are trying this for the first time so we don't have any first hand experience. Reportedly, seed produced by the hybrid is sterile unless able to backcross to one of the parents. We recommend growing our mule palms to a larger size before trying them in the ground. Pot Size: 3.5" (24 fl. oz/709.77 ml)
This fascinating shrub mint was discovered in the South Carolina garden of Woodlanders Nursery by the founder, Robert McIntosh. An obvious hybrid between US natives Clinopodium georgianum and a nearby native conradina...obviously with a less than stellar upbringing. We are publishing the bigeneric name xClinadina, although the cultivar name 'Desi Arnaz' was assigned earlier by Mississippi's Richard Lowrey. The hybrid makes an 18" tall x 2' wide clump of upright woody stems clothed with narrow, glossy green foliage that smells like strong peppermint...probably better than smelling like Desi Arnaz. xClinadina 'Desi Arnaz' is adorned in late summer and fall with small, light lavender flowers. A well-drained winter soil and a bright sunny spot is essential. Pot Size: 3.5" (24 fl. oz/709.77 ml)
This superb form of the man-made bigeneric hybrid x Fatshedera (fatsia x hedera) was selected in Japan and brought to the US by plantsman Ted Stephens, who named it after the town which contains many famous Japanese nurseries. The thick, sweet gum-shaped leaves of rich green are surrounded by a wide creamy white border and held along the semi-upright free-form (nursery lingo for not straight) growing stems. xFatshedera 'Angyo Star' is a fairly slow growing, but exquisitely beautiful selection. Pot Size: 3.5" (24 fl. oz/709.77 ml)
(aka: Fatshedera 'Aureomaculata', F. 'Aureovariegata') This is a most unique plant, a man-made bigeneric hybrid between Fatsia japonica and Hedera hibernica (ivy). The result is a sort-of-woody, sort-of-perennial...let's just say it's a plant with an identity crisis. The semi-upright woody stems of xFatshedera 'Annemieke' are clothed with large maple-like leaves of dark green, each with a giant yellow blotch in the center. Being very tolerant of dark shade, it makes a great colorful accent in the woodland garden. In our garden, it has survived 0 degrees F with fairly severe foliar damage as well as some tip dieback, but quickly recovers. Pot Size: 3.5" (24 fl. oz/709.77 ml)
xHeucherella 'Golden Zebra' is the latest in a line of cool foamy bells from the breeders at Terra Nova. xHeucherella 'Golden Zebra' makes a 10" tall x 15" wide clump of bright gold, deeply lobed foliage with a prominent black pattern in the middle of each leaf. The evergreen clumps are topped with 18" tall, bottlebrush-like spikes of tiny white flowers in spring. Pot Size: 3.5" (24 fl. oz/709.77 ml)
Available 2-2-2012Is x Heucherella 'Solar Eclipse' the best xheucherella ever introduced? It very well could be...what an amazing plant! The 16" wide clumps are composed of dark purple leaves, each edged in a ring of chartreuse. With many patterned xheucherella, the color intensity of the foliage wanes in summer, but not with xHeucherella 'Solar Eclipse'. The amazing clumps are topped in late spring with spikes of white flowers, but you're growing this for the foliage...wow! Pot Size: 3.5" (24 fl. oz/709.77 ml)
xMangave 'Bloodspot' is a Japanese-created hybrid of Agave macroacantha and an unknown manfreda species. This elegant plant makes a 1' tall x 15" wide rosette of 8" long x 1" wide narrow glaucous leaves, which are heavily spotted with cranberry red splotches and edged in tiny, bright red teeth. This is a virtually non-offsetting form, so plant accordingly. Pot Size: 3.5" (24 fl. oz/709.77 ml)
x Mangave 'Espresso' is a fantastic white-edged version of the already stunning xMangave 'Macho Mocha' from plant miracle worker, Hans Hansen. Each 3' wide rosette is composed of thick, fleshy grey-green leaves, smothered in large liver-colored dots and adorned with a wide creamy-white marginal border. You'll stump even the keenest plantsman with this new creation. The leaves are inherently brittle, so shipping will often result in some broken tips but the vigorous growth rate will regenerate new leaves in short order. Pot Size: 3.5" (24 fl. oz/709.77 ml)
Oh, my! On a plant exploration trip into Mexico, Carl Schoenfeld collected seed from a plant of Manfreda variegata. Only when the seedlings were grown was it realized that it had crossed in the wild with a nearby plant of Agave celsii, resulting in the very first xMangave. Each surreal-looking, 3' wide clump of thick, rubbery, glaucous foliage is so covered with iron-purple spots that the clump looks burgundy purple. Established clumps are topped in late spring with thick 8' tall flower spikes...a hummingbird's wet dream. We have had this survive 9 degrees F, but in areas with wet cold winters, grow xMangave 'Macho Mocha' as a container plant. Stunning! Pot Size: 3.5" (24 fl. oz/709.77 ml)
