Sabal 'Birmingham' has been one of the most talked-about palms in the hardy palm groups for years. The original palm, grown from California-supplied seed, survived for more than 40 years in a private garden before being moved to the Birmingham Botanical Gardens in Alabama in 1976. The fronds of Sabal 'Birmingham' appear similar to, but slightly coarser than, a Sabal palmetto. Eventually this palm will get a trunk, but nothing the size of a typical palmetto. The original palm died (after too many re-locations) within the garden. All plants are seed-grown from the original offspring distributed by Woodlanders. Many experts feel this is possibly a hybrid between Sabal mexicana and Sabal palmetto. We recommend protection...for newly planted Sabal 'Birmingham' during the first couple of winters. Our plants are 2-year-old seedlings.
