The genus ruschia contains around 200-300 species of subshrubs and woody groundcovers that are native to southern Africa. As a part of a large family Aizoaceae (whose members are called mesembs) ruschia is closely related to delosperma, lithops, faucaria, and mesembryanthemum.

More Information About Ruschia

If you ever find yourself exploring the deserts and veldts of South Africa, one of the most beautiful sites you will see is a dry valley covered with a carpet of blooming ruschia.

In the wild, ruschia grows in exposed, xeric conditions and a few species live in high altitude sites which gives them enough cold hardiness to grow in the Southeast US. Ruschia is a low growing, succulent-leaved plant that is covered with brightly-colored (usually pink or red), scented flowers in spring.

Like many South African plants, ruschia has adapted to just a few inches of rain per year and does not survive well in situations where its feet stay wet, especially in winter. It is important to plant ruschia in fast-draining soil on a slope or in a raised bed to ensure its survival in winter. Ruschia looks great in a rock garden, cascading over a wall, or in a container. Try combining ruschia with other xeric plants such as agave, opuntia, hardy aloe, or sempervivum. When you are ready to buy ruschia for your perennial rock garden, we hope you'll check out our online offering of ruschia for sale.
