Below is a list of new perennials that have been recently added to our plant shop online. Plant Delights Nursery has major new plant releases twice per year (January 1 and August 1), coinciding with our spring and fall perennial plant catalogs (these new plants can be seen in the ‘New Plants for 2012' page), but we also add new plants to our online plant nursery at other times (e.g., for our open houses or for small trial runs). We notify customers of new plants through our e-newsletter (sign up) so you can find out as fast as possible and order plants before they sell out. Whether it is shade plants, ornamental grasses, rare and exotic plants or simply flowering perennials, Plant Delights carries the best perennials on the market.

We are thrilled to be able to offer a very limited number of the very rare orange-flowered Adonis 'Chichibu Beni'. Although thought to be a selection of Adonis amurensis, recent taxonomic work has shown this to be a hybrid between the diploid Adonis multiflora and the tetraploid (2 sets of chromosomes) Adonis ramosa. Like Adonis amurensis, Adonis 'Chichibu Beni' (Chichibu is a city in central Japan and Beni means red)
opens as early as late January with semi-double cinnamon-orange flowers atop the dark stems, adorned with unfurling fern-like foliage. It will take several years for these to bulk up into a clump. We have found adonis to grow best in moist organic soils.
Pot Size: 3.5" (24 fl. oz/709.77 ml)
Agave isthmensis 'Ohi Raijin Fukurin Nishiki' is a white-edged form of the dwarf butterfly agave, which can only be found along the Mexican coast of Oaxaca near the Isthmus of Tehuantepec (hence the species name). For us, the individual rosettes never exceed 6" tall x 6" wide. The offsets come from the trunk and not from underground runners like many other agave species. The white leaf edge is strongest on the more mature leaves. Because of its small size, Agave isthmensis 'Ohi Raijin Fukurin Nishiki' is perfect as a container plant.
Pot Size: 3.5" (24 fl. oz/709.77 ml)
We are proud to once again offer the very rare, white-flowered form of the Chinese Arisaema candidissimum which was thought to be extinct until 1998. Just like the pink form, the stalks emerge in June with large tripartite leaves that form a tropical-looking clump. Alongside the foliage emerge 15" tall flowering stalks topped with a single white hood, striped green and white toward the base. Perhaps this accounts for the popularity of this plant in parts of northern Alabama and eastern Texas. This easy-to-grow cobra lily makes a truly stunning sight after it becomes established. Pot Size: 3.5" (24 fl. oz/709.77 ml)
This rare offering is a cross of the Japanese arisaemas, Arisaema tosaense and Arisaema sikokianum. The offspring have a dark purple or green-veined spathe (hood) that resembles Arisaema sikokianum except for the extended hood tip from Arisaema tosaense. The "jack" spadix is intermediate between both parents, as is the 5-7 leaflet foliage. This offering of flowering-sized plants is extremely limited and will quickly sell out. Pot Size: 3.5" (24 fl. oz/709.77 ml)
This little-known Japanese selection of the Chinese Aspidistra elatior forms an evergreen clump of 2' tall x 3.5" wide, dark green leaves, each spotted with small yellow dots and dashes with a bit of faint white streaking toward the leaf tip. Each leaf, which has dramatically raised veins on the front, is composed of a 6" petiole and an 18" leaf blade. 'Sei Ryu Ho' is Japanese for "green dragon hall" or in street slang...nappy-headed Don Imus. This made it through our 2008/9 winter in the upper single digits. Pot Size: 3.5" (24 fl. oz/709.77 ml)
This is a great smaller native eastern/midwestern US fern for the rock garden or, for that matter, any garden. Eventually reaching 8" in height with a spread of 15", this extremely drought-tolerant fern is composed of durable, olive green, deer-resistant evergreen fronds. Cheilanthes lanosa grows equally as well in a sunny spot or in part shade...good in acid or alkaline soils. Pot Size: 3.5" (24 fl. oz/709.77 ml)
If you have been looking for a nice companion to Dahlia 'Bishop of Llandaff', look no longer. This delightful dahlia has cut-leaf, dark purple foliage on a well-formed 2' tall clump. Dahlia 'Bednall Beauty' flowers throughout late spring and summer, and again in late summer and fall...a hummingbird double delight. In areas with oppressively hot summers, don't expect many flowers until the weather cools. Dahlias will also perform wonderfully well in those Zone 9 and 10 regions blessed with cool, high summer temperatures. Pot Size: 3.5" (24 fl. oz/709.77 ml)
Dahlia 'Bishop of Leicester' is another in the wonderful Gardening Diocese series of dark foliage dahlias. This particular "Bishop" makes a 2' tall x 18" wide clump of dark purple foliage topped, starting in late June, with light lavender (RHS 78C) flowers, often streaked with a lighter hue. The flowers, revered by hummingbirds, are highlighted by a contrasting center cone of orange with a dark center...praise Jeeesus. Pot Size: 3.5" (24 fl. oz/709.77 ml)
This new "Bishop" has the same dark purple foliage, topped with 3' spikes of 3.5" golden flowers brushed with orange (RHS 17A). The robust clump is topped with hummingbird-revered flowers from June until frost. Just like the Bishop of Canterbury, there is also no Bishop of York. I'm sure the Archbishop of York will be quite dismayed to find he's been demoted by the horticultural community...one of the worst nomenclatural faux pas I've ever seen. Pot Size: 3.5" (24 fl. oz/709.77 ml)
Dasylirion glaucophyllum, from Hidalgo, Mexico, is one of the largest of the sotols. Each 4' tall x 7' wide clump is composted of wavy, 1"+ wide, powder blue leaves that are well-armed on each side. When mature, the clumps are adorned with a 7' tall flower spike of small white flowers that age to tan. Our oldest garden clumps of the drought-tolerant Dasylirion glaucophyllum have grown well since 1999. Pot Size: 3.5" (24 fl. oz/709.77 ml)
Echinacea 'Hot Lava' is a 2009 hybrid from the Terra Nova breeding program. The sturdy 4' tall stems are topped, starting in midsummer, with wide-petaled, orange-coned, bright reddish-orange flowers that attract hummingbirds...quite stunning. Pot Size: 3.5" (24 fl. oz/709.77 ml)
This new European selection of the US native Eupatorium maculatum tops out at only 3' tall. The attractive black-purple stems are topped, starting in July, with small domed flower heads of frilly lavender...a favorite for low-flying butterflies. Pot Size: 2 qt. (1.892 L)
From Notcuts Nursery in the UK comes a stunning new sport of its popular and easy-to-grow Euphorbia 'Charam' (Redwing). The black-purple foliage adorns the compact stems, forming a tight 18" tall x 1' wide evergreen specimen. The deer-resistant foliage is topped, starting in early spring, with large compact heads of bright yellow flowers held just above the foliage by the bright red stems. This is a real WOW plant for a sunny, well-drained spot in the garden! Euphorbia 'Nothowlee' was a 2004 Gold Medal winner at Holland's prestigious Plantarium Expo. We'll also award them the 2004 bad cultivar name award! Pot Size: 3.5" (24 fl. oz/709.77 ml)
This Doyle Smittle hybrid looks like Hedychium coronarium on steroids. The 5' tall stems of Hedychium 'Tai Savannah are adorned with huge green leaves, then topped, starting in midsummer, with 12" tall inflorescences. Each flower head is home to more than 100 very fragrant, creamy-white flowers with a darker yellow central pattern. The contrasting yellow-orange stamens are a nice "Martha" touch. Pot Size: 3 qt. (2.83 L)
Helleborus 'HGC Pink Frost' is one of the best of the Helleborus niger hybrids to hit the market from the Heuger hellebore breeding program. Helleborus 'HGC Pink Frost' is particularly vigorous and floriferous, beginning in mid-February when the outward-facing flowers open pink and age to a lovely dark pinkish-red. Pot Size: 3 qt. (2.83 L)
These Plant Delights seedlings were selected for pink flowers with red spots...some large spots and some tiny spots. All plants have been hand-selected for color after flowering. Deer-resistant! Pot Size: 3.5" (24 fl. oz/709.77 ml)
These deer-resistant hellebores are seed grown from our plants at Juniper Level and have been selected for their double pink flowers. All plants have been hand selected for color after flowering. Pot Size: 3.5" (24 fl. oz/709.77 ml)
These are selected violet-flowered seedlings from the gardens at Plant Delights. All plants have been hand-selected for color after flowering. Deer-resistant! Pot Size: 3.5" (24 fl. oz/709.77 ml)
These deer-resistant lenten rose selections are white-flowered seedlings from the gardens here at Juniper Level....all have bloomed before being made available for sale. Pot Size: 3.5" (24 fl. oz/709.77 ml)
Heuchera longiflora is a little-known rare native species, whose native range is from Ohio south to Alabama, where it can be found only on limestone roadside outcrops. The 10" tall x 18" wide clumps are composed of evergreen olive green and silver patterned foliage. Heuchera longiflora clumps are topped in summer with 3' tall spikes of small yellow flowers. As with all coral bells, a well-drained soil is essential. Pot Size: 3.5" (24 fl. oz/709.77 ml)
