This fascinating Hans Hansen selection of Pteris cretica (coll #HH03CH099) comes from 3,500' elevation near Ping Wu in China's Sichuan Province. In the wild, this dwarf 15" tall x 30" wide plant was found growing among normal 2'+ tall individuals. Even when grown from spores, Pteris cretica 'Ping Wu' has retained the rock garden-size, dense, dwarf habit and extraordinarily narrow fronds. Five-fingered leaves adorn the 1' wide, deer-resistant, evergreen clump on this easy-to-grow fern. This fern looks so good all year it has become one of my all-time favorites, although I'm not thoroughly convinced that it doesn't belong to a different Pteris species.
