Podophyllum (Mayapple)

If you've only seen our native Podophyllum peltatum, you have missed some of the great joys of the genus podophyllum. In the great continental divorce about 250 million years ago, most of the really cool podophyllum species were on the wrong side of the great crack and got stuck in China.

When we started trying non-native mayapples, only Podophyllum emodi was available, which is the most difficult species to grow and certainly not a lover of hot climates. Despite being slow and difficult to propagate, many of the more growable podophyllum species as well as amazing new hybrids are finally becoming available.

In a slightly moist, organic soil, you'll find these new podophyllum selections to be amazing woodland garden specimens. They can be used in the garden as you would a very large hosta or a very short elephant ear. The exotic leaves of Podophyllum make it an excellent choice as a specimen plant or for a mass planting. We are thrilled to offer the very rare pink-flowered form of our native mayapple, Podophyllum peltatum forma deamii 'Missouri May'. As you may have guessed, this form was discovered in Missouri. Just beneath the deeply-lobed leaf, sits a single pink, horizontally-held flower that opens in early spring, just after the leaf has fully unfurled. As with all Podophyllum peltatum, Podophyllum 'Missouri May' spreads via underground stolons to make a 5' wide nice patch in 5 years when grown in rich, moist soils. Thanks to Ellen Hornig of Seneca Hill for making it possible for us to offer this gem.
