More Information About Nolina

We present our expanded offering of Nolina (Bear grass), a fascinating, evergreen, sun-loving, succulent yucca relative. Bear grass is like yucca but without the spines (but they are still deer-resistant). They are quite structural, with some even reaching tree size. Bear grass is great in the garden to provide striking green foliage in winter. In the Southwest, old bear grass foliage is used for making thatched roofs.

Like many plants found in the desert Southwest, Bear grass prefers full sun, is drought-tolerant and does not like heavy, wet soils. Some Nolina species produce a large flower stalk every year that has hundreds of tiny white flowers. Bear grass can be used in the garden anywhere you might use a yucca or a medium-sized ornamental grass....massed on a hillside or in a container. Like yuccas, some Bear grass species produce a trunk and some do not.
