As a rule, lysimachia prefer moist rich soils, but we find many types to be amazingly tolerant of a wide range of conditions. The spreading nature of lysimachia also lends itself to hanging baskets or growing over a wall.

Pair the yellow-leaved lysimachia with dark plants such as a black-leaf colocasia, or Persicaria 'Red Dragon'. Obversely, purple Lysimachia will look great paired with yellow-flowering plants such as daylilies, coreopsis, or gaillardia. This amazing moneywort is the handiwork of plantsman Darrell Probst. This semi-evergreen groundcover makes a nicely-spreading mass of small purple foliage. For us, it makes a 3' wide mat in one season but doesn't show tendencies to eat plants that it surrounds. In late spring, the purple foliage is topped by hundreds of golden bells...a really amazing sight. We've had great luck using this to cover extremely difficult, nearly vertical slopes. In hanging baskets or color bowls, it's a killer!

This easy-to-grow moisture lover is a marvelous, low-growing, golden groundcover whose dime-sized leaves give the ground a year-round golden color. Gold moneywort is perfect for brightening an area in the garden or interweaving to make some great color combinations. While Lysimachia nummularia 'Aurea' grows in shade, it needs a tiny bit of morning sun to maintain the golden color year round.

Lysimachia punctata 'Walgoldalex' PP 13,547 (Golden Alexander Loosestrife)
Lysimachia 'Walgoldalex' is a real WOW plant with a really bad name. This gold variegated sport of Lysimachia punctata 'Alexander' comes from UK plant breeder and plantsman, David Tristam. I actually saw the elusive Walgoldalex namesake in person while hiking in the Himalayas several years back. The 24", upright stems are clothed with round green leaves, each dramatically bordered in bright gold. Unlike Lysimachia 'Alexander', the leaves don't show the "drawstring effect." The clumps are adorned with terminal spikes of bright yellow flowers in midsummer. Moist soils will produce the best results for this non-invasive selection.
