More Information About Knautia
As the common name Scabious implies, Knautia is closely related to Scabiosa. It is a genus of roughly 40 species of meadow or grassland plants that bloom in a variety of colors including light blue, pink, red, and purple.
The name Scabious comes from the use of Knautia to treat the skin disease Scabies. But that's not why we grow it. We like the long-blooming pincushion-like flowers on wiry stems that appear in summer. Knautia prefers full sun, lean soils and blooms for a longer time if dead-headed. However, be aware that the seed heads of Knautia plants are charming, too, so don't break out the clippers too quickly. Some selections of Knautia are spreaders and can over-run tamer plants, so choose your planting site and plan your pruning schedule accordingly.
