Hymenocallis harrisiana is a rarely-seen spider lily that originated from low swampy areas around the region that is now Mexico City, where it is still widely cultivated. The short, rounded, grey-green basal foliage is topped in late July (NC) with up to a dozen 1' tall scapes ending in umbels of very delicate-looking, narrow, white-petalled flowers. The fast-multiplying, tight clumps of Hymenocallis harrisiana make a nice ephemeral spring addition to the moist garden.
