We fell in lust with this unique Ozzie Johnson creation, a cross of Hydrangea macrophylla and Hydrangea serrata, that he named Hydrangea 'Summer Frost'. Our 5-year-old plants have reached 5' tall x 6' wide. The green foliage serves as a backdrop for the June-borne lacecap flowers (NC), blue in acidic soils and pink in alkaline conditions. The most unique aspect of Hydrangea 'Summer Frost', however, occurs during the month of July when the leaves mysteriously turn a lovely cream, starting from the stem and radiating outward. Since this is a heat-based change, those in cool climates will not observe this amazing phenomenon.
