    (aka: Hepatica nobilis var. obtusa) Hepatica is our native North American (Canada south to Florida) first cousin to hellebores. The small shamrock-shaped evergreen (in some climates), leaves are often adorned with purple markings. Starting in late February (NC), the clump are topped with short flower spikes to 6" tall, ending in small flowers that can range from white to blue, and occasionally pink. In the wild, Hepatica americana is usually found in acidic soils, while its' sister, Hepatica acutiloba usually occurs on alkaline soils. That being said, we have also found them fraternizing in the wild toghether on occasions. As a rule, well drained soils are the key to success with hepaticas.
