While we have long enjoyed hemerocallis as a summer perennial in our garden, until recently we have declined to offer them at our plant shop on-line due to the proliferation of specialty daylily nurseries. Realizing that many hemerocallis are now hybridized for show flowers, we have decided to make available some of the distinctive, garden-worthy hemerocallis hybrids as well as a number of the naturally-occurring species. We hope you will enjoy our limited but carefully chosen hemerocallis selections.

Hemerocallis love full sun but grow surprisingly well in some part-sun situations. We have also found that hemerocallis truly prosper when grown in a rich, damp site, even a bog. Hemerocallis plants are easy to propagate so you can quickly expand your plantings or share with friends. Hemerocallis plants pair well with just about everything, so try daylilies with agastache, buddleia, dianthus, ornamental grasses or agave for wonderful color and texture combinations. The colorful flowers also attract butterflies and hummingbirds. When you are ready to buy daylilies for your sun garden, we hope you will check out our online listing of hemerocallis for sale below.
Since 1988, Plant Delights Nursery has been the choice of serious gardeners and plant collectors looking for the best and rarest perennial plants. We are pleased to have received the Perennial Plant Association Retail Award in 2011, the American Horticulture Society Commercial Award in 2002, and to have been selected as one of the Best Mail Order Plant Sources - Garden Design Magazine 2010. Welcome to our family of plant lovers!
In August, when most daylilies are just a memory, there are a few that stand alone...in full flower. One of our favorites is the '60s hybrid (you remember the '60s...free love, ban the bomb, get outta 'Nam), Hemerocallis 'August Flame'. From mid-July through August, the 3-4' tall flower stalks are topped with clusters of large, bright red flowers, each centered with a dramatic yellow-orange blotch...a hummingbird favorite. Because of its height and late season of flowering, Hemerocallis 'August Flame' is an excellent choice for the perennial border. Pot Size: 3.5" (24 fl. oz/709.77 ml)
This reliable, old deciduous Stout hybrid still ranks high on my list of favorite garden-worthy daylilies. In July and August, Hemerocallis 'Autumn Minaret' is topped with rigid, 5' or taller, see-through stalks of fragrant yellow flowers with a dark peachy "eye" marking on every other petal..attractive to hummingbirds. I can think of few other daylilies that blend as well in the perennial border during a time that color is so valuable. Pot Size: 3.5" (24 fl. oz/709.77 ml)
When we acquired this from China as Hemerocallis multiflora, we didn't know what to expect, but were rewarded with an amazing daylily. In midsummer, this gem produces 5' tall flower spikes that are well-branched toward the tip and topped with large, golden yellow, sweetly fragrant flowers that open in the afternoon to attract hummingbirds. The long bloom time, sturdy stems and great branching make this a superb garden specimen. Unfortunately, it doesn't match Hemerocallis multiflora, but more closely resembles a superb giant form of Hemerocallis citrina, hence the name commemorating another well-branched giant from China. Pot Size: 3.5" (24 fl. oz/709.77 ml)
This splendid daylily comes from the hybridizing work of NC plantsman, Wyatt LeFever. The 26" tall stalks are topped with balloon-like white buds that open to a brilliant red flower highlighted by a golden throat...attractive to hummingbirds. Hemerocallis 'Forsyth White Buds' starts flowering for us in late June and continues for a while, thanks to numerous side buds...one of our favorites. Pot Size: 3.5" (24 fl. oz/709.77 ml)
Thanks to a customer, we have a name for this 1913 heirloom daylily hybrid, Hemerocallis 'Gold Dust'. The interspecific cross of Hemerocallis dumortieri and Hemerocallis flava comes from the late George Yeld of England. This is the first daylily to think about flowering in our garden, starting shortly after tax day and continuing into early May in NC. The short flower stalks are topped with bright orange, very fragrant flowers with dark brown stained backs...a hummingbird favorite. For the early season, this is a wonderful daylily that we wouldn't garden without! Pot Size: 3.5" (24 fl. oz/709.77 ml)
Unfortunately, the newer "flower show" hybrid daylilies have gone far from their origin. This native Chinese species is truly one of my garden favorites. In July, the clump of Hemerocallis lilioasphodelus by our deck puts out 3-4' bloom scapes topped with dozens of very fragrant, narrow-petaled, lemony-yellow flowers...that's right...fragrant! The hummingbird-acclaimed flowers open in early evening and close early the following morning, making them perfect for those that like to enjoy their garden at night after a long day at the office or for insomniacs who tire of the Psychic Friends Network. Pot Size: 3.5" (24 fl. oz/709.77 ml)
This 2000 Hemerocallis citrina hybrid from Ohio's Curt Hanson (which originally sold for more than $100) makes a statement in any garden. The masses of 6' tall branched flower stalks begin opening in late June to reveal large, yellow, fragrant, nocturnal (opens around 4pm) flowers...the hummingbirds may lose sleep over this one. Shouldn't we all be looking up to daylilies? I think so! Pot Size: 3.5" (24 fl. oz/709.77 ml)
After years of breeding with a streaked Hemerocallis 'Hyperion', Virginia's Walter and Sybil Przypek hit the jackpot with this stunning, variegated daylily that is sure to be high on collectors' lists. The leaves of Hemerocallis 'Secured Borders' emerge in spring with a narrow green center surrounded on both sides with wide white borders. The small, 12" tall x 18" wide clumps make a stunning statement in the spring garden. As the weather warms, the variegation gradually disappears and the leaves turn green. The clumps are topped with short stalks of yellow flowers in early summer...visited by hummingbirds. The quantities are limited, so don't miss this opportunity. Pot Size: 3.5" (24 fl. oz/709.77 ml)
I first saw Hemerocallis 'All American Chief' in 2001 in the garden of Minnesota hosta breeder, Don Dean, and was blown away. I've grown lots of daylilies, but had never seen one with that much oomph...a technical term. Hemerocallis 'All American Chief' performed equally as well in our NC garden since, as we later discovered, it was bred in NC by our friend, Van Sellers of Iron Gate Gardens. For us, Hemerocallis 'All American Chief' is a vigorous tetraploid with incredibly saturated red flowers highlighted by a yellow eye, all atop 3' tall stalks. The garden show is enhanced because so many flowers open together and the flowering season, which starts in early June (NC), seems to last for a long time. Hemerocallis 'All American Chief' has since won the 2008 Stout Silver Medal from the American Hemerocallis Society, among its many honors. Pot Size: 3.5" (24 fl. oz/709.77 ml)
