Helianthus are widespread natives to North and South America that are primarily summer and fall-flowering perennials (or annuals). Almost without exception, helianthus blooms are yellow-flowered daisies, hence designers often refer to them as ADYCs (another damn yellow composite).

Helianthus species are native from drought-prone prairies to boggy swamps and are renowned for their durability and adaptability. The perennial helianthus range from tall, back of the border plants to short front border specimens that really light up the fall garden. Helianthus flowers positively glow when the setting autumn sun shines through them...plus they attract butterflies. Try perennial Helianthus with purple muhly grass and you'll create a Kodak moment. When you're ready to buy a helianthus for your perennial garden, check out our online list of helianthus for sale below.
Since 1988, Plant Delights Nursery has been the choice of serious gardeners and plant collectors looking for the best and rarest perennial plants. We are pleased to have received the Perennial Plant Association Retail Award in 2011, the American Horticulture Society Commercial Award in 2002, and to have been selected as one of the Best Mail Order Plant Sources - Garden Design Magazine 2010. Welcome to our family of plant lovers!
You are sure to love this Keith Hammett (of New Zealand) selection of our US native Helianthus angustifolius. Instead of the typical 10' tall specimen, Helianthus 'First Light' forms a nice deer-resistant compact clump of fuzzy linear leaves, topped from late September through October with terminal spikes of 2" bright yellow-orange daisies. Frankly, it should have been called "last light," but I guess it's one of those southern hemisphere things. Regardless, we have long needed a more compact swamp sunflower...rejoice! Pot Size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml)
Who needs genetic engineering or nuclear power plant accidents when you've got Mother Nature? Yes, we're talking about the hot, incredible shrinking sunflower. Imagine taking our native swamp sunflower, Helianthus angustifolius, and shrinking it from 8' tall to 1' tall. The leaves are still intact, as are the flowers; it's just now you can plant it in the rock garden instead of the back of the border. In October, the 20" wide clump is truly smothered with large, yellow sunflower blossoms. This outrageous new deer-resistant introduction is just waiting for a place in even the smallest of gardens...get yours today! Pot Size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml)
Helianthus 'Lemon Queen' is our favorite selection of the naturally-occurring midwestern US hybrid of Helianthus pauciflorus var. subrhomboideus x Helianthus tuberosus. In spring, Helianthus 'Lemon Queen' begins its climb to the skies and only stops when it reaches heights between 6' and 8' feet tall. In our garden, the sturdy stems are covered with 2" wide, soft lemon-yellow flowers in July and August. This clumping back-of-the-border sunflower is tolerant of either moist or very dry soils. Pot Size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml)
Helianthus angustifolius 'Matanzas Creek' is a lovely light lemon yellow-flowered form of the US native sunflower, discovered growing by Matanzas Creek in Sonoma County, California. Since it isn't native there, we're not sure if it was just vacationing when it was ruthlessly captured by the folks at Digging Dog...the horticultural bounty hunters. For us, Helianthus 'Matanzas Creek' makes a large patch to 8' tall, topped in mid-October with sprays of light yellow flowers...a superb color break. Unlike some forms of Helianthus angustifolius, H. 'Matanzas Creek' spreads to form a 6' wide colony in 5 years. Pot Size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml)
