Crinum Lilies This study photo album contains images of crinums, primarily grown at Plant Delights. When we began our research on cold hardiness of crinums, we were uncertain how many would tolerate our Zone 7b climate, whose winter lows can reach 0 degrees F. We have been pleasantly surprised with our successes, and we now know that some crinum species, despite their warm climate origins, can even tolerate winters as far north as Zone 5b. Our trialing continues, and we are particularly interested in trialing all of the species. If you have any species crinums to share for trial, we would be most interested. Special thanks to International Bulb Society stalwart Dr. David Lehmiller of Texas, whose dedication to the genus has made it possible to acquire species that would have otherwise been impossible to obtain. All image are copyright of Plant Delights Nursery Inc. unless others are designated in (). Thanks to Andy Cabe, Dave Lehmiller, and Herb Kelly for sharing images. For those wishing to learn more, there are three excellent groups with a similar focus: International Bulb Society http://www.bulbsociety.org/ Indigenous Bulb Association of South Africa http://www.safricanbulbs.org.za/ Pacific Bulb Society http://www.pacificbulbsociety.org/

Lycoris (Surprise Lily, Hurricane Lily) have long been a geophyte of interest, and since our climate is perfect for their growth, we are attempting to assemble a complete collection, and sort out some of the taxonomic misinformation. It is our feeling that many species names are simply synonyms, while other species are simply old clonally propagated hybrids. We have assigned Plant Delights (PDN)numbers to designate and monitor individual clones. We will continue to post images as our collection expands. If you have any selections of species that we may not grow, we would be very interested to swap plants. All images are copyright of Plant Delights Nursery Inc. unless designated in parenthesis

Trilliums - PDN Selections Below are clonal selections of southeast US native trilliums that have been named by Plant Delights. By growing thousands of trilliums from seed each year, we are finding an amazing amount of genetic diversity as you will see from the images below.

Ghosts of Catalog Covers Past Since 1998, we are honored to have the Nationally Awarded (multiple Reuben Award Winner) cartoonist Jack Pittman to draw our catalog covers. The covers are a joint effort between Plant Delights owner Tony Avent who provides the ideas and Jack Pittman, who turns those ideas into art. Our covers are intended as a current events satire with horticultural twist.

Meet Our Cats Not only do we grow plants, but we’ve even got room for a few non-plants. The nursery is protected 24/7 by members of “the PDN family”. Yes, we’re talking real about the real sopranos. If you’ve visited the gardens during open house, you have no doubt met some or all of our family of cats. Even if you didn’t see them, you can rest assured that they had you in their sights.
