We have long been enchanted with the exotic pendent flowers of the South American fuchsia, although in our hot, humid, climate these flowering perennials usually have a shorter life span than a deer trying to cross the road during a redneck drag race. We are finally finding some truly heat-tolerant fuchsia species and hybrids for those outside of the Pacific Northwest...finally, transplants from the Pacific Northwest can grow fuchsia in their North Carolina gardens!

Growing and Caring for Fuchsia

Fuchsia is easy to care for, but is picky about its environment. Too much or too little water will kill these perennial flowering plants. So will too much sun. But the effort is all worth it when the dangling, brightly colored, hummingbird-attracting flowers emerge. When caring for a fuchsia, remember that it is native to the forest under-story in semi-tropical locations in South America. To best duplicate that environment, fuchsia should be grown in rich, well amended and consistently moist, but not sopping wet soil, and in dappled shade. As many fuchsia are killed by over-watering as by under-watering. If you grow your fuchsia in a container or hanging basket, that means that you will need to be vigilant about watering as they dry out quickly. Fuchsia like plenty of fertilizer and will grow quickly. There are two types of growth habits, upright (like a small shrub) and trailing.
