Erythronium (Trout Lily, Fawn Lily, Dog's Tooth Violet, Adder's Tongue)

Underground, Erythronium plants produce tooth-shaped bulbs. Some Erythronium species have edible and apparently tasty bulbs and leaves but other species are slightly toxic and are used as a contraceptive and emetic.

Erythronium are woodland or meadow plants and prefer humus-rich, well-drained soil. Plant your Erythronium bulbs where they will receive ample sunlight in March and April, but progressively more shade later on. Erythronium flowers are held in a downward-facing position at the tip of a j-shaped flower stalk. Most erythroniums flower in early spring and go summer dormant, so don't freak out when they "die" in July.
