More Information About Erigeron

The genus Erigeron is quite large, with 390 species of annuals, biennials and perennials, not including all of the cultivars on the market too. Although distributed worldwide, North America has the largest number of native species of Erigeron (173). As a member of the Aster family, Erigeron has a distinctive daisy-like or aster-like flower with many 'petals' (actually ray florets) surrounding a yellow, disk-like center (the disk florets). Erigeron flowers are usually white, blue or pink in color and are produced in profusion for 1-2 months in the summer or fall, depending on the species.

Erigeron species prefer full sun, well drained soils and just a small amount of fertilizer. They will not be as floriferous in rich soils. In the garden, Erigeron should be used like a low-growing, drought tolerant aster. You can mass them together towards the front of the border, put them into a rock garden, or grow them in a container. Butterflies love Erigeron flowers almost as much as we do. This is a low maintenance plant but will benefit from a hard pruning every few years.

Like with so many of our wonderful native plants, Erigeron is actually more popular in Europe than it is here in America. We hope that by offering Erigerons for sale, we will spark a Star Wort rebellion here at home.
