This 1973 collection from Soviet Georgia by the US National Arboretum's Skip March was later named by Darrell Probst. At the onset of cold weather, the amazing deer-resistant, evergreen foliage of Epimedium 'Thunderbolt' darkens to charcoal black with contrasting green veins which form a "thunderbolt" pattern. This species, which spreads by rhizomes, makes a 3' wide patch in 6 years, topped in spring with 10" tall flower spikes with open-faced, bright yellow flowers.
