Disporum (Solomon's Seal)

Disporum is a genus of plants known as Solomon's seal, which also includes other genera like Disporopsis, Uvularia, and Polygonatum. Disporum is native to both the US and Asia. Despite many of the Asian disporum being from warmer climates, we have been amazed at their winter hardiness...some to Zone 5! Disporum are great, easy-to-grow woodland plants that combine well with both ferns and hostas.

Disporum can be clumpers or runners, forming patches of arching stems with bell-like flowers that attract butterflies. Disporum flowers are followed by single black berries. There are several variegated disporum cultivars that can brighten a dull shady spot. Disporum bodinieri 'Shina no tsuki' (China Moon Solomon's Seal)
This Japanese selection of the Chinese Disporum bodinieri (not a disporopsis as it is often listed) makes a tight deciduous clump of 18" arching stems, adorned with glossy dark green leaves, each highlighted by a bright golden center. When used en masse, Disporum 'Shina no tsuki' (translated as "China Moon") is wonderful to brighten a summer woodland garden and makes a great textural contrast when planted near ferns. The clumps are topped in May (NC) with small white terminal flowers.

Disporum flavens (Yellow Fairy Bells)
(aka: Disporum uniflorum) I first encountered this fairy bell in the wild in 1997 on Korea's Uulong Island. Even before then, I already prized it as the star of the Genus disporum. As the plant emerges (like a Solomon's seal) in spring, the vivid yellow flowers at the end of the stalk are already visible. As the upright stalk reaches its ultimate height, within days the tips turn outward and the yellow flowers burst forth in a spectacular display...a great upright 2' wide clumper for the woodland garden. In late summer, the clump is covered with dark black berries...very easy to grow and simply superb in the woodland garden.
