Digitalis (Foxglove)

Digitalis is a popular genus of ornamental plants known for its tall spikes of tubular flowers in shades of pink or purple and for its use as a heart medicine. The flowers also attract butterflies and hummingbirds. We strive to make available true perennial orange and yellow flowering Digitalis species or cultivars that are not often seen in the US instead of the ubiquitous biennial Digitalis purpurea.

Digitalis plants prefer partial sun in the South, but also grow well in part sun. Foxgloves prefer acidic soil and do not like to be crowded by other plants. Although there are some perennial species of digitalis which are not long-lived, keeping the old flower stalks removed seems to help extend their life. Remember that digitalis produces a deadly poison that alters heart rhythm so do not eat your plants. Digitalis 'Waldigone' PP 20,937 (Goldcrest Foxglove)
(aka: Digitalis 'Goldcrest') Digitalis 'Waldigone' is the latest introduction from British plant breeder David Tristam. This cross of the perennial Digitalis grandiflora and the woody Digitalis obscura produced a nice clump-former, adorned with small, glossy, evergreen foliage, topped throughout the summer with 18" branched spikes of large hummingbird-attracting apricot flowers, each highlighted by interior brown specks. Unfortunately, the plant was christened 'Waldigone', but is sold under the invalid name, 'Goldcrest'...I'll be glad to loan my copy of "The International Code of Nomenclature" if that would help the EUPOV office and breeders understand how to properly name plants.
