Cyrtomium, commonly known as holly ferns, are known for their bold tropical appearance, which is in stark contrast to the soft-textured nature of most typical ferns. Cyrtomium ferns are tough and durable plants. Cyrtomium ferns tolerate drought conditions and make great additions to the low-maintenance woodland garden. We are pleased to offer an extensive listing of the most cold-hardy cyrtomium ferns for sale.

Like most ferns, cyrtomium species prefer part shade and a rich consistently moist but not soggy soil, but they can tolerate short periods of drought. Unlike many hardy garden ferns, cyrtomium also make good houseplants in climate where they aren't winter hardy. Deer tend to avoid the leathery, evergreen Cyrtomium fronds, preferring more tender plants to nibble on. The bold texture and leathery fronds make Cyrtomium ferns good plant partners for hosta, carex, arisaema, dicentra and solomon's seal. (Cyrtomium caryotideum T-459/05) This Asian/US native fern looks completely different from Cyrtomium falcatum...in fact, it looks like a caryota palm leaf. The olive drab foliage consists of very large pinnae (leaflets to the taxonomically disadvantaged) with five or so attached to each side of the stem ("rachis" to you enlightened folks). The end leaflet on each stem has a cool three-lobed look...sort of like an amur maple. Each clump of this evergreen and deer-resistant fern will eventually make a lovely 3' wide mound. Cyrtomium 'Go Fish' represents Chinese genetics from a particularly vigorous individual in our garden. Pot Size: 3.5" (24 fl. oz/709.77 ml)
This is a very limited offering of our spore-grown wild collections of Cyrtomium falcatum from Taichung County in east central Taiwan at 5819' elevation. We don't yet know if they will show any morphological variation from the standard material in the trade, since we have no idea where those originated. Expect a 20" tall x 3' wide evergreen clump at maturity. Pot Size: 3.5" (24 fl. oz/709.77 ml)
In 2008, I was walking through the temperate house at the Missouri Botanic Garden, when my eye was drawn to an obviously odd holly fern in the midst of a mass planting. Upon feeling up the foliage (still legal in Missouri), it was obvious the ploidy (the number of chromosomes) was higher than normal. Instead of feeling like a normal holly fern leaf, the foliage felt like thick plastic. The garden was kind enough to share spores which were identical to the parent, so we christened it Cyrtomium 'Plasticity' and are making it available for the 2-3 people like me that find this kind of thing intriguing. The plant size and shape is similar to the species...around 1' tall x 2' wide. Pot Size: 3.5" (24 fl. oz/709.77 ml)
