Crinum hildebrandtii hails from the Comoros Islands, northwest of Madagascar, where it grows as an aquatic plant. In our trials, Crinum hildebrandtii resembles Crinum ligulatum, and has been quite happy in typical well-amended, slightly moist garden soils. Starting in mid-April, the offsetting compact clumps of 3' long dark green leaves serve as a backdrop to the numerous 30" tall flower spike, each topped with umbels of 18-22 fragrant white spidery-petalled flowers that also resemble Crinum ligulatum, only with slightly wider petals. Crinum hildebrandtii is a truly superb garden plant, thriving for us since 2008, and having no problems with winter temperatures of 7 degrees F.
