Crinum 'Alamo Village' is an amazing crinum lily that has graced old southern gardens for decades but was popularized by the late Dr. Thad Howard of Texas, who discovered the plant in the 1960s in Alamo Village, Texas. The fast-growing clumps of glossy, light green foliage are topped continuously throughout the summer with 4' tall stalks of large, fragrant, spidery-petaled flowers that emerge as magenta buds but open near white with a maroon blush to the petal tips. We have counted as many as 18 flowers on a single spike. Although no one is sure of its origin, Dr. Howard suggested that Crinum americanum is one of the parents. Whatever combined to make this hybrid, it's a real winner. Just remember that to raise a garden, it takes an Alamo Village.
