Coniogramme is a group of mostly Asian ferns that has a uniquely tropical appearance and has become one of our favorite genera of hardy garden ferns. In our temperate garden, coniogramme has performed well for years. While the genus coniogramme is mostly stoloniferous, it is quite slow to spread, forming a fantastic patch.

Coniogramme is quite tough as a garden plant, prefering partial shade and tolerating a wide variety of soils. Coniogramme fronds can be quite tall and in some cases are variegated with small yellow stripes. The leathery fronds are also deer-resistant. Coniogramme is an exotic-looking coarse-textured fern and looks great when paired with hosta, selaginella, fatsia, or with other ferns. Available 3-1-2012(aka: Coniogramme emeiensis Marble leaf) This amazing form of the bamboo fern comes from China's magical Mt. Emei (also spelled Omei). Coniogramme emeiensis 'Golden Zebra' makes a stunning, slowly spreading, 2' tall patch of 4' long, arching, branched, ribbon-like fronds, each highlighted with regularly spaced horizontal yellow bands. So far, Coniogramme emeiensis has been hardy to 9 degrees F in our trials. Where it isn't hardy, Golden Zebra striped bamboo fern will make one really cool houseplant! Pot Size: 3.5" (24 fl. oz/709.77 ml)
This is one seriously odd fern...heck it's even odd for a coniogramme, which itself is pretty odd. Coniogramme 'Rasha' was discovered in Toyama Prefecture, Japan...perhaps on a nuclear waste facility. The 18" tall fronds, bizarrely distorted like a fern after rigor mortis, emerge from a slowly spreading rhizome. To quote President Abraham Lincoln, "People who like this sort of thing will find this the sort of thing they like." Pot Size: 3.5" (24 fl. oz/709.77 ml)
Coniogramme 'Shishi' is a rather rare and unusual form of the Asian bamboo fern. The upright, dark glossy-green, tardily-deciduous 2' tall fronds are composed of large pinnae (fern leaflets) each ending in a fancy petticoat-like crest. Expect a 3' wide patch in 5 years, thanks to the spreading rhizome. Rich, moist soils result in the best growth, while very dry soils will slow its spread to a crawl...a dramatic and unique specimen in the garden! Pot Size: 3.5" (24 fl. oz/709.77 ml)
Japanese nurserymen are known for finding (and creating) odd mutant plants and there is no better example than Coniogramme intermedia 'Yoroi Musha'. The 3' tall x 2' wide fronds emerge from a slowly creeping rhizome (4' wide in 5 years in NC). Each glossy, dark green frond has pinnae that randomly mutate and form odd protrusions, ensuring that no two fronds are exactly alike. We find that these easy-to-grow coniogrammes are equally at home in dry or moist soils. Pot Size: 3.5" (24 fl. oz/709.77 ml)
Coniogramme japonica has long been one of the most admired and requested ferns from our garden. Japanese bamboo fern is a unique bold-textured fern with upright, 2' tall, dark green, plastic-feeling fronds, emerging from a slowly spreading rhizome. For us, our 10-year-old clump of Coniogramme japonica is 3' wide. Where we have seen this growing in the wild, bamboo fern seems to prefer a moist to slightly moist woodland soil...very easy to grow. Pot Size: 3.5" (24 fl. oz/709.77 ml)
This fascinating selection of bamboo fern was shared by Judith Jones, who got the plant from former California fern collector, Gordon Becker. For us, Coniogramme japonica 'Variegata' has made a tremendous 3-4' wide patch in the garden where it spreads by short rhizomes. Emerging from the rhizomes are 3' tall, upright, glossy-green, deciduous leaves, each composed of large pinnae and decorated with small "variegated" bands. We truly love Coniogramme japonica 'Variegata' and are glad to finally have enough to share. Pot Size: 3.5" (24 fl. oz/709.77 ml)
